Calling a Spade a Spade/ තිත්ත ඇත්ත !

I often hear the Sinhalese being referred to as මහජාතිය by they themselves and by others here and abroad. It is important to realize that words and their meanings that have found their way into dictionaries and such have not got there by accident. A quick glance at the language standardization process would show that out of the many thousands of words that people who speak a particular language come up with every day only a few are set down in black and white. And it is also important to understand that every Somalatha and Piyasena we see on the road cannot determine which words out of those words that go mainstream get the seal of approval and which are branded as taboo, vulgar, etc. Whether we like it or not we must understand that it takes the support of a small group of people with an enormous amount of socioeconomic and political clout for a word to consolidate its position in the acrolect of a language. A few others may find their way into mesolects and be used of a generation or two. The majority live underground as counter-culture terms or as hush-hush words and die un-mourned within a short time. The same goes for meanings. So, what we may call commonsense when it comes to a selection of a word and/or what we assume to be the meaning of that term is actually hegemonically predetermined. Therefore, no matter how harmless they may seem to us, words are loaded with “meanings” and we must give due consideration to their socioeconomic and political implications before using them.
Louis Althusser, I think, had done some work on this phenomenon called hailing which places the burden of responding to the hailing on the respondent. Looked at from Althusser's point of view, when the Sinhalese respond to the hailing “මහජාතිය” or refer to themselves by that term, they become the receptacles to all the connotations and denotations associated with the term. Every world order throughout human history is constructed by the minority, of the minority, and for the minority at the expense of the masses. Today’s minority neocolonialist groups, however, are more insidious in the methods they use to keep the masses down and enslaved: they who have an enormous amount of power over the standardization process of languages have resorted to the use of language as a stealth weapon against the masses. Under such circumstances, the use of the term මහජාතිය which is especially loaded to the brim with negative associations is worthy of some careful consideration.
The term මහ implies magnitude in multiple ways: numerical, social, economic, political, etc. However the reality is that though the Sinhalese might be the numerical majority here in Sri Lanka, the so-called minorities are linked to huge groups outside the island that claim them as their own. Moreover, I am not sure whether the Sinhalese could be considered the majority even numerically as many so-called Sinhalese reject that tag and claim internationalist or even meta-nationalist status. Socially, politically, and economically, too, the Sinhalese do not have any real power in Sri Lanka. A quick study of the business and sociopolitical world of Sri Lanka would remove any doubt one may harbour on this regard. Yet contrary to the reality I see the term මහජාතියbeing repeatedly thrust on the Sinhalese today. When hailed often enough at least some of those who are hailed would fall for the trick and call themselves මහජාතිය - Gobble’s Theory - not knowing that they are being set up upon a wall like Humpty Dumpty for a great fall from which they would never recover. Many Sinhalese seem to be willfully blind to the fact that the so-called minorities and separatists use the term මහජාතිය as a psychological weapon to induce collective guilt/responsibility over any negative situation they may care to think up and debit to the account of the Sinhalese. Or that by doing so these insidious entities aim to whittle away at the will of the Sinhalese to safeguard their pride as a nation of people. [Foucault's take on how to instigate social change may offer a valuable insight on this regard.] The ultimate aim of these groups seems to be to reduce the Sinhalese into a doormat status. Very Machiavellian, don't you think?

This is the Sinhala translation of my note “Calling a Spade, a Spade” by my friend Samanmalee Abayasiri

The “humour” poems in our syllabus while providing humour, attempt to convey some greater truths. Discuss this statement with relevance to three poems in your syllabus:

The term “humour” is often associated with silliness, meaninglessness, lack of depth, etc. Therefore, when a poem receives the “appellatio...
